Participatory epidemiological study on the burden of rabies in animals and humans in three districts of Buno Bedele Zone, West Ethiopia

Rabies is one of the priority zoonotic diseases and a major public health challenge in Ethiopia. Dog plays an important role transmission disease to humans. With this point mind, study was conducted selected districts Buno Bedele Zone namely Bedele, Gechi, Dabo Hana districts, Western Oromia regional state from December 2019 April 2020. The objective know status burden rabies community using participatory approach retrospective record assessment animal human facilities. Twelve interview meetings were 12 Kebeles, which involved 156 informants. In survey authors learned that dogs species most affected by followed cattle, human, cat, equine, shoats. Accordingly, dog had average score 64 out 100 with range 50-80. Besides, outbreak frequently noted between June October areas. Slaughter sharing meat for household consumption common practice taken salvage bitten cattle. As per available area, estimated cases incidence 1.75 bovines, 18 dogs, 2.37 equines, 2.28 cats, 0.37 shoats 10,000 animals annually. annual post-exposure vaccinations records 75, 39, 63 Hana, Gechi respectively.
